Emergency
Emergency? Call us now.
Our emergency line is open 24/7, every day of the year. Please call before you set off so we can get ready for you.
Mon–Fri 8–7 · Sat 9–3 · Sun 10–2What to do, step by step
- 1
Stay calm and call
Call the emergency line. Tell us the type and age of your pet, what happened and when.
- 2
Follow our advice on the phone
The vet will tell you what to do right away - for example how to stop bleeding, or not to make your pet vomit.
- 3
Move your pet safely
Carry an injured dog on a blanket or board, and cats in a closed carrier. Pets in pain can bite - be careful.
- 4
Bring what matters
The packaging of any poison or medication swallowed, plus a list of your pet’s current medications.
Is it an emergency?
Don’t wait until morning if you notice any of these:
- Difficulty breathing or blue-tinged gums
- Heavy bleeding that won’t stop
- Swollen, hard belly and unproductive retching
- Suspected poisoning
- Suspected snake bite
- Hit by a car or fall from height
- Seizures or collapse
- A male cat straining but unable to urinate
Common household poisons
- Chocolate and cocoa
- Xylitol (sugar-free gum)
- Grapes and raisins
- Rat and snail bait
- Human medications (ibuprofen, paracetamol)
- Lilies - highly toxic to cats
Don’t induce vomiting unless a vet tells you to.
